This particular 1941 is fitted with factory original right hand throttle instead of Indians usual left, with the gearshift on the left instead of the right. This machine may have been a police bike. These smooth running bikes were very popular with law enforcement and they often specified right throttles.
Kenny Edmiston, of Portland OR acquired this machine from Howard Johnson of Illinois whose name is on the title. Kenny received it in pieces. The engine, which was still crated, had been rebuilt by Ken Young Sr. Edmiston restored it, started it up then sold it to Trev Deeley in 1991, who had it decommissioned and placed in our best collection.

After the war the Indian Motocycle Company had a surplus of unsold army machines and sold them to the public at low prices, including the very low production 841 which looks just like a Moto-Guzzi except for the flathead (sidevalve) engine heads. The 841 even had shaft drive and foot-shift/hand-clutch. Sadly Indian never continued this relatively advanced design as a civilian model after the war. It weighed close to 550 lbs. and the engine probably only produced about 25 horsepower so that may have been a concern. Admittedly it was a lot like the BMW except that the cylinders were in a V instead of facing each other.

Vehicle Description
The 1941 Indian Four that you are bidding on is the raffle bike for the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Columbus Ohio. This event was held in July of 2006 during the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.
The Motorcycle Hall of Fame purchased this motorcycle from the president of the Antique Motorcycle Club of Indonesia.
The 1941 Indian Four is one of the last of the American in-line fours, all of which are interrelated design-wise.
1941 was the next to the last year of Indian Four production and only a handful of 1942s were built. The 1941 and 1942 models were almost identical and production of the late ones was very limited. The inline four was expensive to produce because the United States was at the height of World War II.
Indian was America's oldest motorcycle brand and was once the largest manufacturer of motorcycles in the world.
