Refined, larger capacity (646cc) engine
Remote gear linkage
Black silencer finish
The Daytona name is stuff of racing legend for Triumph Motorcycles and never used lightly. An evolution of the Daytona 600, a machine that proved itself in both short circuit and real-roads riding, the Daytona 650 is a pure supersports machine. It features a race-bred chassis offering direct, uncut connectivity with the tarmac matched to an engine spinning out a maelstrom of power and torque.
The engine stroke has increased 3.1mm to 44.5mm and boosting the engine capacity 47cc to 646cc has seen the Daytona 650 surge of top-end power bolstered with a great gobbet of mid-range torque. The result is an engine that works effortlessly on the road and addictively on the racetrack.
No matter the situation the Daytona 650 rewards its rider with instant acceleration and lightning-fast throttle response throughout the rev range. Peak power of 114PS arrives at 12,500rpm, with a peak torque figure of 68Nm at 11,500rpm. Power delivery, thanks to a new EFI tune, is significantly improved throughout. Further refining the engine is a clutch fitted with a backlash eliminator gear while the slick-changing six-speed gearbox has been enhanced with a remote linkage. A redesigned seven-plate clutch (down two plates) balances the extra weight of the backlash gear. |

The Rocket III unique, fuel-injected twelve-valve longitudinally mounted inline three-cylinder engine has a cubic capacity of 2,294cc that 140 cubic inches using massive 101.6mm diameter pistons. It makes 147ft-lbs of torque at 2,750rpm. This incredible output means even two-up the Rocket III accelerates incredibly hard without obvious effort, and relentless forward motion is just a slight twist of throttle away.
From the outset of the Rocket III project, back in 1999, gaining precise control of the huge engine was recognised as intrinsic to the bike success. Twin butterfly valves for each throttle body are used and this set-up allows the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) to control the mixture flow and ignition map dependent on gear selected and road speed. This allows the torque curve to be tailored specifically for each gear ratio. And the result is impressive ?over 90% of the engine prodigious torque output is available at just 2000rpm, giving incredible levels of flexibility and making the five-speed gearbox (nearly) redundant.
However while the Rocket III statistics and looks are striking Triumphs are built to be ridden, not just admired. At the heart of every Triumph motorcycle is a core belief in usability and the Rocket III is no exception. So while the Rocket sheer presence was always a fundamental part of its appeal, one of the project team other key goals was to build a great handling bike. |
